AALE Announces New Acting President

The American Academy for Liberal Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr.
Charles Butterworth as acting president of the Academy effective January 15, 2011.

Butterworth is an emeritus professor of politics and government at the University of Maryland.
He brings to the position a distinguished scholarly career focused on Arabic-Islamic political
thought, service on AALE’s board of trustees, and a lifetime commitment to liberal education.

“Charles is a strong voice for the liberal arts and sciences,” said AALE Board Chair Dr. Ralph
Rossum. “As chair of the board’s Academic Affairs Committee, Charles has played a central
role in overseeing AALE’s domestic accrediting efforts. Further, his involvement in AALE’s
expanded work overseas, especially in the Middle East, gives him considerable expertise in
AALE’s ongoing work of accreditation and advocacy in the liberal arts, both domestically and
abroad.”

Butterworth succeeds outgoing president Jeff Martineau, under whose leadership AALE has
become a prominent voice for liberal education outside of the U.S. while continuing its important
domestic accreditation activities.

The Academy continues to function as the only accrediting agency for programs and institutions
focused on liberal education. A search for a permanent president will commence soon.
